Tracing the comedic path of a rising star as she navigates love, life, and laughter.
Today, Natasha Rothwell turns 46, and we are apparently the ones who remembered. Her career has been a whirlwind of laughter and creativity, marked by stunning performances and a commitment to storytelling that resonates with many. Rothwell's talent has taken her from the classroom to the comedy stage, culminating in memorable roles that showcase her unique voice in the industry.
After completing her studies in theater at the University of Maryland, Rothwell took a rather unconventional route. In 2009, she moved to Japan to teach English. While there, she performed at the Tokyo Comedy Store, laying the groundwork for her future in comedy. It was a brave leap into the unknown, but Rothwell embraced the challenge, blending her love for performance with her teaching experience.
Rothwell’s big break came in 2016 when she joined the cast of HBO's series Insecure as Kelli Prenny. The show, created by Issa Rae, tackled contemporary issues faced by black women with humor and heart. Rothwell not only acted in the series but also contributed as a writer and supervising producer. The show ran for five seasons and became a cultural touchstone, further establishing Rothwell’s presence in the industry.
In 2021, Rothwell took on the role of Belinda Lindsey in the HBO series The White Lotus. This character became a standout, earning Rothwell a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The show’s blend of dark comedy and social commentary resonated with audiences, and Rothwell’s performance was a key highlight, showcasing her ability to balance humor with depth.
Beyond her acting career, Rothwell is known for her activism. In 2019, she participated in a significant protest, joining fellow writers in firing their agents to stand against the Association of Talent Agents' packaging practices. She is vocal about issues such as women's rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and civil rights, stating, "When you live in DC for almost 10 years, you kind of can't help but be politically active." Rothwell’s commitment to activism adds another layer to her already vibrant persona.
In 2024, Rothwell expanded her creative horizons by co-creating, producing, and starring in the Hulu comedy series How to Die Alone. The show centers on a 35-year-old JFK airport worker navigating love and self-discovery, a premise Rothwell can relate to personally. Critics praised the series for its fresh perspective on love and loneliness, further solidifying Rothwell’s status as a multifaceted talent in the entertainment industry.
