From courtroom to cabinet, a look at the journey of a Czech politician.
Robert Pelikán, born on October 18, 1979, in what was then Czechoslovakia, holds a unique distinction among his peers: he was appointed the Minister of Justice of the Czech Republic at the remarkably young age of 35. That’s not just a footnote in his career; it’s a statement about the rapid ascent of a man who transitioned from the legal world to high-level politics.
Pelikán began his professional journey in 2002 as a Junior Associate at the law firm Císař, Češka, Smutný and Co. He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Charles University in Prague, which is not exactly known for letting just anyone through its doors. After a six-month internship at the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg in 2006, he passed the Bar exam in 2007, officially marking the start of his career as a lawyer.
On March 12, 2015, Pelikán was appointed the sixteenth Minister of Justice of the Czech Republic, stepping into a role previously held by Helena Válková. His appointment was met with skepticism, particularly from Pavel Zeman, the Supreme Public Prosecutor, who criticized Pelikán's plans to increase state control over the Prosecutor's Offices. This wasn’t a small matter; it was the kind of push that could make or break a minister's reputation almost overnight.
In 2017, Pelikán took a step into the political arena by being elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies. This was a significant leap, showcasing his political ambitions beyond the courtroom. However, the clouds started to gather when, on April 7, 2018, he announced his decision to leave politics, citing stark differences with his party that ultimately led to his resignation from all executive posts. He remained in his ministerial role until June 27, 2018, when a new government was formed.
After his departure from the political scene, Pelikán didn’t vanish into obscurity. In October 2018, he joined the international law firm Wolf Theiss as a Counsel, where he became part of the newly-established regional Corporate Investigations practice. This move illustrates his return to the legal profession but with a twist—now armed with political experience. It’s a rare blend of skills that few can claim, allowing him to navigate both legal and political landscapes.
Today, as Pelikán turns 47, he stands at an interesting crossroads of law and politics. With his rich background in both fields, he continues to influence the legal landscape in the Czech Republic, albeit from a different vantage point. This birthday serves as a reminder of his journey so far and the unique perspective he brings to any table he sits at.
