A look back at the life and influence of a Japanese rock pioneer.

Atsushi Sakurai's unexpected passing on October 19, 2023, marked the end of an era for Japanese rock music. He was not only the lead vocalist of Buck-Tick but also a pioneer credited with shaping the visual kei movement. His influence extended beyond his band, resonating in the hearts of fans and musicians alike. With a career spanning 38 years and 23 studio albums, Sakurai's work has left a profound impact on the music landscape of Japan.

The 1985 Vocal Switch

In December 1985, a pivotal moment occurred in the history of Buck-Tick when Atsushi Sakurai took on the role of lead vocalist, replacing the band's original singer. Prior to this, he had joined the band in 1983 as a drummer, but after the departure of the lead, his enthusiasm pushed him to step into the spotlight. This decision would prove significant, as Buck-Tick's first major label album, Sexual XXXXX!, released in 1987, began their ascent in the Japanese music scene.

A Breakthrough at Tokyo Dome

November 1989 marked a turning point for Buck-Tick as they performed at the prestigious Tokyo Dome for the first time. This concert followed the release of their fourth studio album, Taboo, which had reached number one on the Oricon charts. The performance solidified their status as a leading band in Japan, showcasing Sakurai's distinctive voice and theatrical stage presence that captivated audiences. The Tokyo Dome concert became a landmark event in their career, setting the stage for future successes.

The 1990s Health Scare

In December 1996, Sakurai faced a serious health scare that threatened both his life and Buck-Tick's tour plans. He developed acute peritonitis while on a photo shoot in Nepal and had to be flown back to Japan for urgent treatment. This incident forced the band to postpone their Chaos After Dark Tour. Fortunately, after a month of hospitalization, he recovered and returned to the stage, demonstrating his resilience and commitment to music.

A Solo Venture

In June 2004, Atsushi Sakurai ventured into his solo career with the release of his album Ai no Wakusei. This album showcased his versatility, featuring collaborations with various musicians and marking a new chapter in his artistic expression. It was also during this time that he made his acting debut in Ryuhei Kitamura's short film Longinus, further expanding his creative horizons beyond the music scene.

The Final Concert

On October 19, 2023, during a Buck-Tick concert at KT Zepp Yokohama, Sakurai displayed signs of illness that led to a sudden end of the performance. Despite his visibly declining health, he continued to perform for the fans until he was escorted off stage. Tragically, he passed away later that night due to a brainstem hemorrhage. His death left a void in the music world, prompting a wave of tributes from fellow musicians and fans, celebrating his significant contributions to rock music.
