Remembering a beloved Chinese television host
On October 25, 2018, the world lost Li Yong, a prominent Chinese television host whose presence was felt across millions of homes. Known for his flamboyant style and sharp wit, he brought entertainment to life through various programs on China Central Television (CCTV). Today, we remember his contributions and the joy he brought to audiences across China.
Li's breakthrough came in 1997 with the launch of Lucky 52, a gameshow that quickly gained massive viewership, averaging around 50 million viewers per episode. The show, based on a British format, aired on CCTV-2 and became a Saturday night staple for many families. Its popularity catapulted Li into the national spotlight, establishing him as a key figure in Chinese entertainment. The show's final episode aired on October 25, 2008, marking the end of an era for both Li and his fans.
By 2001, Li Yong became one of the six main hosts of the CCTV New Year's Gala, a show with an estimated audience of several hundred million each year. This annual event was an essential part of Chinese culture, and his participation positioned him as a household name. His unique hosting style and ability to connect with viewers helped him stand out among his peers during a time when television was rapidly evolving in China.
In 2005, Li was recognized by the World Brand Laboratory as the top TV host in China, a title he held for several years. His unconventional looks and flamboyant outfits set him apart from his contemporaries. With a penchant for sequins and vibrant colors, Li's wardrobe choices were as memorable as his humor on screen. He often laughed at his own jokes, creating an approachable and entertaining atmosphere that endeared him to audiences across the nation.
Despite his success, Li faced controversies during his career. In early 2007, he made a comment on Lucky 52 that implied laziness among Shaanxi citizens, which sparked backlash across online platforms. He later apologized publicly for the remark. In 2008, amidst rumors of resignation, he announced that Lucky 52 would come to an end. However, he made a notable comeback in 2011, returning to host the CCTV New Year's Gala, where he continued to entertain millions.
In June 2016, Li was announced as the new presenter of The Voice of China, rebranded as Sing! China. This move signaled his ongoing relevance in the entertainment industry, despite facing health challenges. Li Yong battled cancer for 17 months before his passing in 2018. His contributions to Chinese television remain significant, and he is remembered for his ability to connect with audiences and bring joy to millions. His wife, Ha Wen, who directed many of his shows, continues to honor his legacy.
